Nobel Laureate Sir Richard J. Roberts Visits Lithuania

A few months ago, Nobel Prize laureate Sir Richard J. Roberts visited the Vilnius University Life Sciences Center, where he met with members of the community and learned about the preparations for the 2026 International Biology Olympiad (IBO), which will be held in Vilnius.


During his visit, Sir Richard was introduced to this year’s Olympiad plans and became acquainted with the scale and significance of the international competition. He also viewed the symbolic IBO trophy, which is currently on display at the Life Sciences Center as Lithuania prepares to host the prestigious event.


Sharing his encouragement for the upcoming Olympiad, Sir Roberts stated:

Sir Richard J. Roberts was awarded the 1993 Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine for the discovery of split genes, a breakthrough that fundamentally changed our understanding of gene structure. His visit serves as an inspiring milestone for both organizers and future participants, reinforcing Lithuania’s commitment to delivering a world-class scientific event in 2026.
